THE NEXT STAGE OF RESTORATION WORKS ON THE PREMISES OF THE FORMER TIKVAT T’ZION SYNAGOGUE HAS BEEN COMPLETED
Friends, we`d love to share the results of the restoration work carried out on the premises of the former Tiquat T`Zion synagogue, where the office of our Museum is now located. The works were carried out by Daria Borodenko, a student of the Ivan Trush Lviv State College of Decorative and Applied Arts, a paintings restorer.

For 9 months, Daria was engaged in the restoration of paintings on the ceiling and walls. On the ceiling, the specialist removed later whitewashes and tinted one prepared part. On the walls and friezes, where the later paintings are located, she removed the whitewashes and cleaned the drawings from dust contamination.
The murals in our office are examples of the ornamental secession style, popular at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, while the Jewish motifs date back to a little bit later times – the 20s and 30s of the 20th century when the building was used as a synagogue.

We still have a lot of work ahead, in particular, to establish the authorship of the paintings. They are probably the works of the Fleck brothers. It is believed that they decorated the former Jewish hospital on Rappaport Street in Lviv. Of course, the rest of the paintings in the room also need to be restored. It is possible that in the future it will be possible to discover still unknown parts of the murals, as well as to explore the nearby buildings of the former Jewish quarter. Then we can have the whole image.
